Does putting my laptop (windows xp) in Standby mode park the hard drive?
I like to put my laptop in standby mode when I take it home from work, and to work from home to keep my current workspace intact and avoid the long shutting down and booting up process (no patience, I know). I want to know if in standby mode the hard drive heads are parked. If not I fear I may be damaging the hard disk when I carry the laptop around in my backpack.
No. Standby does not park the hard drive. Standby actually continually uses battery power as well.
If you want to transport your computer, use Hibernate. It saves everything you are doing by imaging your Ram, puts that as a file on the hard drive, and shuts down the system. When you power the system back up, that image file is loaded back into Ram, and you continue where you left off.
