First-aid Needs in Breckenridge
!–[if gte mso 10]> It is always a great idea to prepare ahead before spending a day of hiking in Breckenridge, Colorado. Although you are not likely asking for accidents to happen, it’s always recommended to be prepared by packing a basic first-aid kit to carry along with you. These simple supplies will make you and those you are hiking with feel safer and more protected as you set out for your exploration. With some luck, you’ll probably only need a willing pair of legs and maybe a camera to capture the spectacular scenery right before your eyes.
Prior to loading your backpack with first-aid supplies, consider some important things like the extent of time you’ll be hiking, the size of your group and the level of difficulty your hike will take. A short one-mile hike with a few friends will require different packing than a long trail with just someone for a companion. Remember to keep your basic needs in mind and consider bringing the following items along with you:
- Ace Bandage and Bandana
An ace bandage will be necessary should there be a need to wrap a sprained ankle while a clean bandana can become a savior should you need to clean or wrap a wound. Your clothing and gear are likely to get dirty and dusty from the trail so bringing these two items is extremely practical. Both of these items are light weight so there’s no need to worry if it will easily fit into your pack.
- Ibuprofen and Antihistamine
It is such a drag to experience muscle swelling when you’re on the trail. From the slightest throbbing to a serious strain, ibuprofen will help the swelling go down and will help alleviate the pain. On the other hand, antihistamine can help ease an allergic reaction if it develops while you’re on the trail. Allergic reactions can be aggravated if not treated immediately so bringing antihistamine can provide temporary and often lasting relief. It is also a good idea to bring hydrocortisone cream should you or someone in your group be unexpectedly stung by a bee.
- Alcohol Swabs, Antiseptic Ointment, and Bandages
A minor or major wound should be cleaned and treated quickly. Although a clean bandana and water will allow you to clean the wound, you’ll want to follow with alcohol and antiseptic to remove the danger of infection. You can wrap the cleaning by applying a bandage to the wound. If bandages aren’t available, you can tie a clean bandana around the wound as an immediate option.
- Moleskin
Blisters have been known to quickly ruin a day hike as they can become quite annoying and painful. Your first line of protection against developing blisters is to try wearing your hiking boots in advance and see if they are comfortable to your feet. Sometimes however, blisters may still develop especially if your going on a long and tough trail so applying moleskin is an easy way to provide support and extra padding so that you can continue your hike comfortably. You may have to carry a small pair of scissors or a multi-tool in order to cut the moleskin to fit your feet.
- Sunscreen and Lip Balm
The sun is unforgiving in Breckenridge and at high elevations, the rays are even stronger and more threatening. You will want to apply a strong dose of sunscreen before you begin your hike and reapply as needed throughout the day. It is also necessary to protect your lips from chapping by applying lip balm with UPF protection before starting on your hike.
These supplies are only the most basic forms of protection but the necessary kit can differ from individual to individual. Aside from these first-aid items, it is also strongly advised to pack plenty of water, quick-energy foods and extra layers of clothing. There is nothing to ruin a perfect day of hiking faster than an injury. Always keep yourself safe and ensure your peace of mind by making necessary preparations and familiarizing yourself with the trails ahead of time.
